Qualifying Exam

The Qualifying Exam is required for Masters, PHD and Direct PHD courses.

Registration for the qualifying exam is the student’s responsibility and must be completed within the maximum period indicated on the student’s form in the Janus system.

The exam must be taken within 90 (ninety) days after registration.

The examining committee must be made up of three members, with a minimum doctorate degree. The supervisor is not permitted to participate in the case of master’s, doctorate and direct doctorate qualifications.

Procedures:

Master’s students should pay attention to the qualification notices published every six months on the Postgraduate website.

Master´s degree

The Master’s student must register for the qualifying exam after completing 20 (twenty) credits in mandatory subjects. A monograph and the form submition (digital sign using USPAssina or GOV.BR system). aforwarded by e-mail pgrcem@sc.usp.br

Both the registration period and the date of the qualification exam will be established by the CCP, published on the program’s website, and will occur within 15 (fifteen) months from the student’s first enrollment in the program.


The exam will consist of an evaluation of a monograph of no more than 20 (twenty) pages and an oral presentation on the research project, as well as an analysis of the academic record.

Registration for the exam will be done through the Janus System => “Requests” option, when the monograph and form submition (digital sign using USPAssina or GOV.BR system).

The oral presentation will take place in a public session, with a maximum duration of twenty minutes, followed by an argument by the Examining Board, and should not exceed a total period of two hours.


Students who fail the qualifying exam may retake it only once. Registration must be completed within 60 (sixty) days after taking the first exam.

If the student fails the exam, he or she will be removed from the program and will receive a certificate for the subjects taken.

PHD

The purpose of the qualifying exam for the Doctorate is to assess the candidate’s ability to independently develop his/her thesis project within his/her area of ​​research.

After completing the minimum credits required in courses, the PhD student must register to take the qualifying exam within a maximum period of 24 (twenty-four) months after the date of first enrollment in the course. Direct PhD students must register within 27 months.

Registration for the exam will be done through the Janus System => “Requests” option, when the monograph and Form of submition (digital sign using GOV.BR or USPAssina system)


For the PHD, the exam will consist of the evaluation of a monograph and analysis of the candidate’s academic record.

The monograph will be 40 (forty) to 60 (sixty) pages long. It may also be replaced by articles published by the candidate with an introductory chapter to contextualize the work with the candidate’s project and schedule of activities.

Oral presentation will take place in a public session, with a maximum duration of thirty minutes, followed by an argument with a maximum total duration of four hours.


Students who fail the qualifying exam may register to retake it only once. The new registration must be made within a maximum period of 120 (one hundred and twenty) days after taking the first exam. The second exam must be taken within a maximum period of 90 (ninety) days after registration.

If the student fails the exam, he/she will be removed from the Program and will receive a certificate for the subjects taken.
