Scholarships

The postgraduate program has a limited number of scholarships from the system Fundação Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) and Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), with a period of validity according to each development agency.

The available scholarships are awarded to those entering the Postgraduate Program based on their final classification in the selection process.

The classification will be valid from the date of announcement of the candidates classified in the selection process, respecting their classification, until the beginning of the registration for the next selection process. After this period, the candidates classified and who did not receive a scholarship must participate in a new selection process to compete for the scholarship.

Other scholarships may occasionally be offered, and interested students should pay attention to the notices published on the Program website and emails sent by the Coordination.

Information for students

Accumulation of scholarships

The CCP allows the accumulation of scholarships with other income in all cases where the scholarship holder meets the following requirements:

  1. Full dedication to the activities of the postgraduate program;
  2. When having an employment relationship, be released from professional activities;
  3. Not have an employment relationship with USP;
  4. Not accumulate the scholarship with another scholarship for the same level and purpose, originating from public resources;

Examples of permitted accumulations: income from rent, pensions, investments, paid or unpaid leave, among others.

The CCP will analyze on a case-by-case basis requests for the accumulation of the master’s or doctoral scholarship with other activities, whether paid or not, based on the following criteria:

  1. Demonstration of the student’s ability to combine other activities with postgraduate studies;
  2. Student’s experience in the topic of the proposed research plan;
  3. Student’s previous academic and scientific performance.

The following situations are foreseen and can be authorized upon request:

  1. The existence of interest from the organization/company to which the student is linked in the proposed research plan, demonstrated by documents, as long as it meets the established criteria.
  2. The scholarship holders may be authorized by the CCP to dedicate a maximum of 12 hours per week to carrying out scientific and professional activities, whether paid or not, that contribute to their professional training and that are compatible with their research plan. In the case of teaching activities, the scholarship holder may teach a maximum of 8 hours of classes per week.
  3. In the case of a newly incubated company without revenue, the scholarship holder may be a managing partner or participate in the administration of the small company that will host the approved project (such as FAPESP PIPE). Participants in the Teaching Improvement Program/PAE; Participants in the USP Talent Attraction and Retention Program/PART; Participants in the USP Student Retention and Training Support Program;
  4. The CCP may add other situations to this list.

The authorization request must be sent to the CCP before the start of the activities that are intended to be combined with the scholarship, by means of a form and agreement of the advisor with the student’s affiliation, signed by the Scholarship Holder and his/her Advisor.

Scholarship cancel

The cancellation of a scholarship may occur due to the expiration of the validity period or at the discretion of the CCP.

The continuation, suspension or cancellation of institutional scholarships for all scholarship holders will be assessed by the CCP through the biannual activity report and the advisor’s opinion.

  1. Delivery will be electronic (instructions on the PGrCEM page), in the months of February and August, under penalty of suspension or cancellation, without prior notice.
  2. The August report will refer to the period from January to June of the same year;
  3. The February report will cover the period from July to December of the previous year.

Implementation

The available scholarships are awarded to applicants to the Postgraduate Program based on their final ranking in the selection process.

The CCP will reserve part of the master’s and doctoral scholarships in the selection processes exclusively for candidates of Brazilian nationality who self-declare as black, mixed race or indigenous (PPI), classified as such in accordance with the option for reserved places and the racial self-declaration provided for in the selection process announcement. The reservation of scholarships for PPI candidates will be made according to the total number of scholarships available by the CCP for each level:

  1. Up to 2 (two) scholarships available: distribution will follow the classification order (broad competition), with the PPI option considered as priority in the event of a tie;
  2. From 3 (three) to 5 (five) scholarships: 1 (one) scholarship reserved for PPI candidates.
  3. From 6 (six) to 8 (eight) scholarships: 2 (two) scholarships reserved for PPI candidates.
  4. Above 8 (eight) scholarships: 3 (three) scholarships reserved for PPI candidates.

IMPORTANT: In the distribution of all other scholarships, following the classification order (broad competition), the PPI option will be considered as a priority in cases of a tie, as per the selection process notice.

The scholarships will be implemented for the classified students from the moment they enroll in the program and sign the term of responsibility by the student.

Suspension and Reactivation of the scholarship

CAPES scholarships may be suspended for a specific period of time at the student’s request.

The reactivation of CAPES scholarships must also be requested by the student. This is not an automatic process. The student must express his/her opinion in order for the reactivation to take place.

  • By email (pgrcem@sc.usp.br) with the subject “Suspension of scholarship – student’s name” or “Reactivation of scholarship – student’s name”;
  • Through the Janus system’s application system;
  • Through the contact us section on the PGr-CEM website
