Scholarships
The postgraduate program has a limited number of scholarships from the system Fundação Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) and Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), with a validity period according to each funding agency.
The available scholarships are awarded to those entering the Postgraduate Program according to their final classification in the selection process.
The classification will be valid until the beginning of the registration for the next semester. After this period, the candidates classified and who did not receive a scholarship must participate in a new selection process.
In addition to the scholarships listed above, the Postgraduate Program Coordination (CCP) encourages advisors to seek financing and scholarships from companies and other funding agencies, particularly from Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP).
Extension of Deadlines

III.1 In the Master’s course, the deadline for submitting the dissertation is 30 (thirty) months.
III.2 In the Doctorate course, for holders of a master’s degree, the deadline for submitting the thesis is 48 (forty-eight) months.
III.3 In the Doctorate course, without prior obtaining of the master’s degree (Direct Doctorate), the deadline for submitting the thesis is 54 (fifty-four) months.
III.4 In any of the courses, in exceptional and duly justified cases, students may request an extension of the deadline for a maximum period of 180 (one hundred and eighty) days.
The student must request by form (digital sign by GOV.BR ou USPAssina system) using Sistema Janus – menu Requerimentos. The request will be analyzed by the Program Coordinating Committee (CCP), and if granted, the deadline will be recorded in the student’s records.

Leave of Absence
Students enrolled in a Master’s or Doctorate course may request to suspend their enrollment, limited to 365 days, when they are unable to continue their academic activities.
The request must be made through the Sistema Janus. The document must contain:
- Student Request form (digital sign using GOV.BR or USPAssina system). This document must have the date of the begining of the “leave of absence” and how many days the studant requests;
- Detailed opinion from the supervisor as to whether the student will have enough time to complete the dissertation/thesis after returning to academic activities;
- Detailed schedule of activities that must be carried out after the end of the suspension period;
- Document that justifies/proves the need to suspend the course, such as: medical certificate, employer document, etc.

The leave of absence may be retroactive to the date of the occurrence of the reason for its granting, if requested and while the reason persists.

Stop enrollment will not be granted during the validity of an extension of the deadline for completion of the dissertation or thesis, with the exception of cases of illness, at the discretion of the CaN of the CoPGr;

In cases of leave of absence due to illness of the student or his/her family, the CPG will forward the request for deliberation by the CaN do CoPGr;

Discontinuance
The enrolled student may be removed from the course in the following cases, according to the USP Postgraduate Regulations:
- If you fail the same subject twice or fail three different subjects;
- If you do not enroll regularly in two consecutive school terms within the deadline set out in the school calendar set by the CoPGr;
- If you do not pass the qualification exam within the deadlines set out in these Regulations;
- If you do not complete the activities or requirements within the regulatory deadlines;
The student may also be dismissed for the following reasons:
- Failure to submit mandatory documents after 90 days of virtual enrollment;
- Failure to submit the semester report;
- Failure to submit the semester report;
- Failure to register for the qualifying exam or defense;
- At the student’s request (Form digital sign using GOV.BR or USPAssina system);
If the student wishes to cancel their course can do it using Sistema Janus, menu “Requerimentos”.
Maternity leave
Students enrolled in a Master’s or Doctorate course may take maternity or paternity leave, with suspension of the counting of statutory deadlines, in addition to the deadline established in art. 46.
§ 1º – The postgraduate student may take maternity leave for a period of up to six months.
§ 2º –The postgraduate student may take paternity leave for a period of twenty days.
§ 3º – To grant the license, the following requirements must be met:
I – Form digital sign using GOV.BR or USPAssina system) addressed to the CCP, accompanied by the birth certificate;
II – The license will be granted from the date of birth or adoption, and requests after the acquisition period will not be accepted.

Half-Yearly Activity Reports
Students will be evaluated every six months through activity reports, according to a schedule established by the CCP, disclosed by the secretariat and published on the Program’s website.
IX.3 The report must contain a summary of the student’s research project, a description of the activities carried out and the achievement of planned goals, and the planning or re-planning of future activities. It must also be accompanied by an assessment, by the advisor, of the student’s academic and scientific performance, using a specific form published together with the semester call for submission of the report on the program’s website.
IX.4 Students whose report is rejected must arrange to submit a new report within a maximum period of 30 (thirty) days, counting from the date of approval of the rejection by the CCP.
IX.5 In addition to the rules established in the USP Graduate Regulations, the student may be removed from the graduate program, in any of the courses (Master’s, Doctorate and Direct Doctorate), if one of the following situations occurs:
a) Failure to submit the semester report of activities twice in a row;
b) Failure to submit the semester report by the deadline set out in the calendar, published by the graduate office and on the program’s website.
The student must submit the semester report via the system PPG-Docs.

Enrollment in Subjects and Monitoring Enrollment
Mandatory Enrollment in Subjects or Monitoring
Students must enroll in mandatory subjects every semester through the Sistema Janus.
O calendário acadêmico é estabelecido semestralmente pela Pró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e divulgado na página do programa “Oferecimento de Disciplinas”.
Students who have already completed the mandatory credits must request Monitoring Enrollment through the Janus System every semester at the beginning of each academic term.
If the student misses the date for including the follow-up registration, he/she must request his/her registration using the eletronic form of Sistema Janus uploading the form”Matrícula de acompanhamento“
Minimum number of credits in Mandatory Subjects
- Master’s course: 20 crédits
- PHD: 20 crédits
- PHD (without previous master´s degree): 40 crédits
Minimum Credits
IV.1 Master’s students must complete a minimum number of credit units, as follows: 96 (ninety-six) credit units, of which 40 (forty) are in courses and 56 (fifty-six) are in the dissertation.
IV.2 Doctoral students who hold a Master’s degree from USP or have it recognized by it must complete a minimum number of credit units, as follows: 152 (one hundred and fifty-two) credit units, of which 30 (thirty) are in courses and 122 (one hundred and twenty-two) are in the thesis.
IV.3 Doctoral students who have not previously obtained a Master’s degree must complete a minimum number of credit units, as follows: 192 (one hundred and ninety-two) credit units, of which 70 (seventy) are in courses and 122 (one hundred and twenty-two) are in the thesis.
Credit utilization in subjects
The student may complete part of the mandatory credits with subjects that are outside the list of mandatory subjects presented in the Program.
The student must submit using Sistema Janus, the follow documents:
- Form, digital sign using GOV.BR or USPAssina system;
- The syllabus of the subject that the student wants to include the credits;
- An official document from the educational institution indicating the student’s attendance and grade
Qualifying Exams: Master's and PHD
O Qualifying Exams é exigido nos curso de Master´s course and PDH.
Registration for the qualifying exam is the student’s responsibility and must be completed within the maximum period indicated on the student’s form in the Janus system.
The exam must be taken within 90 (ninety) days after registration.
The examining committee must be made up of three members, with a minimum doctorate degree. The supervisor is not permitted to participate in the case of master’s, doctorate and direct doctorate qualifications.

Defense Exams: Master's and PHD
A Final Exam is required for Master’s, Doctorate and Direct Doctorate courses to obtain the Master’s or Doctorate degree.
Registration for the exam is the student’s responsibility and must be completed within the maximum period indicated on the student’s form in the Janus system.
The student must deposit his/her thesis or dissertation in the Janus System, under the “Digital Deposit” menu.

PAE - Teaching Improvement Program
The Teaching Improvement Program of the University of São Paulo aims to improve the training of USP postgraduate students for undergraduate teaching activities and its composition consists of two stages:
- Preparação Pedagógica: consists of participating in the subject SMM5784 – Pedagogical Preparation: Teaching Strategies in Engineering or one of the subjects indicated by
- Estágio Supervisionado: under the supervision of the responsible professor, act in academic activities of EESC undergraduate courses, such as seminars, laboratory experiments, guided studies, discussion of topics in small groups, organization and participation in shifts to clarify doubts, apply tests and exercises, and teach classes in up to 10% of the total workload of the discipline).
The PAE is optional for USP Postgraduate students, except for CAPES Doctoral scholarship holders, who must comply with the Program to meet the requirements of the Portaria nº 034, de 30 de maio de 2006, da CAPES, regarding the “Teaching Internship” requirement.

To request the use of PAE Credits, the student must attach the Form (digital sign using GOV.BR or USPAssina system) and the certificate of participation in the PAE in the Janus System – Applications.
