Master’s or Doctorate degrees are obtained after fulfilling the course requirements, including the defense of the dissertation (master’s degree) or thesis (PHD).
A Master’s dissertation is considered to be the text resulting from supervised work, which demonstrates the ability to critically systematize the accumulated knowledge on the subject in question and to use scientific, technological or artistic research methods and techniques, aiming at academic or professional development, in accordance with the nature of the area and the objectives of the course.
A Doctorate thesis is considered to be the text resulting from supervised scientific, technological or artistic research work that represents an original contribution to research and innovation, aiming at academic or professional development, in accordance with the nature of the area and the objectives of the course.
Procedures:
Dissertations and Theses must be deposited by the student in the Sistema Janus in digital format (file extension must be PDF), using Supervisor’s letter of consent (digitally signed using GOV.BR or USPAssina system) and bank suggestion form (master´s degree / PHD)complying with the deadline specified in your student registration available in the student file in the Institutional Postgraduate System (Janus).
If the advisor does not agree, the student’s request for deposit will be assessed by the CCP and the CPG.
The dissertation or thesis will be incorporated into both the University Library and the USP Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations by the University’s Graduate Studies Office.
At the student’s request, with the advisor’s consent, the dissertation or thesis may be kept in a reserved collection for a period of up to two years, renewable once for the same period. The request must be submitted at the time of deposit. The request must be made at least 60 days in advance of registration for the qualifying exam and deposit of the dissertation or thesis. The correction of approved Dissertations and Theses will be permitted, in the manner regulated by the CoPGr Resolution, which must be delivered within 60 days after the defense by email (pgrcem@sc.usp.br) together with the corrected sample delivery form .
The result of the defenses must be approved by the Undergraduate Committee within a maximum period of forty-five days from the date of the defense. (Legal basis: Artigo 30, inciso XVIII da Resolução 7493/2018)

Video conference exam
The CCP may authorize the participation of examiners in the public defense session of Dissertation or Thesis, via videoconference or other equivalent remote electronic support.
As defined in the CPG Meeting held on 05/13/2024, we inform that requests for REMOTE Defense Boards must observe the following regulations to characterize exceptionality:
- Return of the postgraduate student to his/her country of origin or to a destination abroad, for residence or work;
- Return of the postgraduate student to his/her city of origin or another destination in the country, for residence or work, provided that it is more than 250 (two hundred and fifty) km from the headquarters of the Postgraduate Program;
- Official leave abroad of the advisor and/or postgraduate student for a period exceeding 30 days
- Medical reasons that make it impossible for the postgraduate student and/or advisor to travel to the PPG;
Omitted cases must be presented for evaluation by the CPG in a timely manner, or the defense session must be postponed and rescheduled for a later date, in compliance with the statutory deadlines for the defense.
The student must request the panel remotely by filling out the form available in the PPG-Docs system, Documents resource,”Videoconference test exame form“
de solicitação de banca remota” and forward the request together with the other deposit documents via Sistema Janus.
Master’s Defenses
The final work in the master’s course will be in the form of a dissertation, following the formato tradicional or formato de coletânea of articles that are directly linked to the student’s dissertation work and in which he is the main author.
The student must submit his/her dissertation electronically in the Janus system by the deadline indicated on his/her student record, together with the submission form Suggestion for examining board and the Supervisor’s letter of consent (digitally signed using GOV.BR or USPAssina system). The system will also require the student to upload digital copies of the following documents: undergraduate diploma (front and back), undergraduate transcript (front and back), birth or marriage certificate (front and back), ID (front and back – driver’s license or employee registration card are not accepted)
Judging committee: will consist of 3 regular examiners and 3 substitute examiners. The chairman of the committee must be the student’s advisor and the other professors/doctors must be external to the program. (Legal support Resolution 7493/2018)
The maximum period for defending a Dissertation or Thesis is one hundred and five days, counted from the first designation of the judging committee by the CPG.
The defense session must be held in public session.
For a reserved session, the student must make a request at least 60 days in advance of registering for the exam and depositing the dissertation in the Sistema Janus . See the procedure.
The student will have 60 minutes to present his/her work.
The examiners’ arguments must take place in a public session and must not exceed 3 hours. (Legal support Resolução 7493/2018, artigo 91)
Immediately after the conclusion of the dissertation or thesis examination, each examiner will express his/her judgment in a secret session, considering the candidate approved or rejected. The candidate who obtains the approval of the majority of the examiners will be considered approved.
The student must submit the final (corrected) version within 60 days after the defense by email (pgrcem@sc.usp.br) together with the corrected sample delivery form.

Dissertation in collection format:
The dissertation in the format of a collection of articles must also follow the dissertation format, with the following changes:
- After presenting the justification and objectives, the author must show the articulation of the published and submitted articles, present in the body of the dissertation. The articles must be related to the specific objectives of the dissertation.
- If there are not enough articles to demonstrate the results of all the specific objectives, the body of the dissertation may have chapters combined with articles and unpublished text, as long as they are properly articulated at the beginning of the dissertation.
- The conclusions must contain a summary view of all the results obtained with the articles that were included in the dissertation.
- The Dissertation must be written and defended in its entirety or in part in Portuguese, English or Spanish.
- Issues regarding the copyright of the articles used in the preparation of the dissertation are the responsibility of the student.
PHD Defenses
The final work in the doctoral course will be in the form of a thesis, following the traditional format or in the format of a collection of articles, of those in which the doctoral student is the first author.
The student must submit his/her thesis electronically in the Janus system by the deadline indicated in his/her student record, together with the application form Suggestion for examing board e a Supervisor´s letter of consent (digitally signed using GOV.BR or USP Assina system. The system will also require the student to upload digital copies of the following documents: undergraduate diploma (front and back), undergraduate transcript (front and back), birth or marriage certificate (front and back), ID (front and back – driver’s license or employee registration card are not accepted)
Judging committee: will be composed of 5 examiners and 5 substitute examiners. The president of the panel must be the student’s advisor, two members external to the program, one USP professor external to the PGr-CEM and one professor accredited to the PGrCEM. (Legal support Resolution 7493/2018 and current PGrCEM rule)
