Postgraduate in the Materials Science and Engineering Program

About the Postgraduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PGrCEM)

Focused on the development, characterization and application of Materials, PGrCEM aims to train qualified professionals, through advanced teaching and research activities, to work in research and development centers at universities and national and international companies.

In the master’s degree, the Program seeks to train professionals with specific knowledge in the areas of ceramic, polymeric, metallic and composite materials, through advanced experimental and theoretical techniques, enabling them to solve current scientific and technological problems.

In the doctorate, in addition to the knowledge provided by the master’s degree, the Program aims to train highly specialized professionals, capable of solving complex problems at the frontier of knowledge in Materials Science and Engineering.

The Program’s teaching and research activities are based at the São Carlos School of Engineering (EESC), with the participation of the São Carlos Institute of Physics (IFSC) and the São Carlos Institute of Chemistry (IQSC). The integration of students and faculty from these units into a single program encourages the sharing of postgraduate and undergraduate laboratories, the carrying out of joint work, and the optimization of resources.

Stricto sensu Postgraduate Studies, which include PGrCEM, comprise a set of activities carried out within the scope of Postgraduate Programs, accompanied by a supervisor, which include teaching and research, aiming at the integration of knowledge, innovation and the development of society.

The stricto sensu Postgraduate course has as its basic unit the Postgraduate Program, consisting of areas of concentration (Development, Characterization and Application of Materials), research lines, disciplines and faculty and students.

Master’s or Doctorate degrees are obtained after fulfilling the course requirements, including defending a dissertation or thesis.

Master’s Course

Master’s students must complete a minimum number of credit units, as follows: 96 (ninety-six) credit units, 40 (forty) in subjects and 56 (fifty-six) in the dissertation.

The Master’s dissertation will be the result of supervised work. The text must demonstrate the ability to critically systematize the accumulated knowledge on the topic in question and to use scientific research methods and techniques, aiming at academic or professional development.

The dissertation must be submitted for defense within a maximum period of 30 months.

PhD

Doctoral students holding a Master’s degree from USP or recognized by it must complete a minimum number of credit units, as follows: 152 (one hundred and fifty-two) credit units, 30 (thirty) in subjects and 122 (one hundred and twenty-two) in the thesis.

The doctoral thesis will be the result of supervised scientific research work that represents an original contribution to research and innovation, aiming at academic or professional development.

The thesis must be submitted for defense within a maximum period of 48 months.
