USP Student Retention Program Offers 2,500 Grants to New Students

The Student Permanence and Training Support Program (PAPFE) offers assistance to undergraduate and graduate students with socioeconomic difficulties. This year, the amounts were adjusted to R$850, in the case of full assistance, and R$320 for partial assistance.

Next Monday, January 13th, registrations for the Student Permanence and Training Support Program (PAPFE) will begin, which provides assistance to undergraduate and postgraduate students with socioeconomic difficulties.

There will be three registration periods: the first period runs from January 13 to February 14; the second period runs from February 15 to March 12; and the third period runs from March 13 to April 11. Registrations must be made through the USP Computing Services Portal.

This year, the amounts were adjusted and the full aid is now R$850. For students who are granted places in USP student housing, the aid amount is partial, at R$320. All those who are granted benefits will also be entitled to free meals in university restaurants.

The granting of aid depends on the socioeconomic analysis of the candidate and, in the case of a place in student housing, on the availability of places on each campus.

“Our goal with this program is to assist the education process of our most vulnerable students, so that we can continue to achieve inclusion with academic excellence. Associated with several other initiatives of the University, PAPFE constitutes the largest student retention policy in Brazil”, highlights the Pro-Rector of Inclusion and Belonging, Ana Lúcia Duarte Lanna.

In 2025, 2,500 grants will be made available to new students – 2,208 full grants and 292 partial grants, with housing spaces. In total, between new students and veterans, more than 15 thousand students benefit from the grant, which guarantees conditions for their education and permanence at the University.

Students regularly enrolled in undergraduate and graduate courses, with a per capita family income below 1.5 times the minimum wage in São Paulo, who have not completed another degree at USP and who do not receive any other aid from the University may apply to the program.

The permanence allowance, however, may be accumulated with a single scholarship – for example, PUB, PAE or another academic modality – or internship at USP.

Registration

The first registration period will be from January 13 to February 14, electronically, through the USP Computer Services Portal (https://portalservicos.usp.br), with the mandatory attachment of documents proving the socioeconomic situation declared on the form.

Students who will be admitted in 2025, students who have already received a continuing education grant in 2024 and wish to change the type of grant, students who have transferred courses internally, and students who were already eligible for an undergraduate degree but have completed their course and entered graduate school can apply.

Students enrolled in the School of Dramatic Arts (EAD) must register in person. Appointments can be made by email at papfe.prip@usp.br.

The announcement for the 2025 Student Retention and Training Support Program can be found on the website of the Office of the Vice-Rector for Inclusion and Belonging. For more information and to clarify any doubts, interested students should contact us by email at papfe.prip@usp.br.

Assistance with the São Paulo State Exam and the USP Diversa Program

In addition to the scholarships offered by the University, approximately 450 students who passed the Provão Paulista Seriado, with family incomes of less than or equal to one and a half minimum wages, will be able to receive a monthly scholarship of R$850, valid until the end of the course. These grants are the result of an agreement signed between the Department of Education of the State of São Paulo and USP.

Another program created to supplement the University’s student retention policy is USP Diversa – an initiative that collects donations from individuals and legal entities interested in financing scholarships for undergraduate students in situations of socioeconomic vulnerability.

To apply for both the Provão Paulista Grant and the USP Diversa Program, students must register with PAPFE for an assessment of their socioeconomic situation.

Socioeconomic assessment

The process of evaluating and selecting students, and implementing and monitoring PAPFE benefits are coordinated by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Inclusion and Belonging (PRIP).

The socioeconomic analysis takes into account indicators of education, housing, origin, transportation, income, and sociodemographic factors of the student and his/her family.

Students with the greatest socioeconomic vulnerability will be considered, according to the resources determined by the University. The classification is unique, regardless of the campus in which the student is enrolled.

The single list remains valid throughout the year. Thus, students who meet the criteria for granting PAPFE benefits but are not granted PAPFE benefits, due to their classification on the single list, may be called to receive financial aid from the USP Diversa Program, or if benefits are made available due to withdrawals or cessation of grants.

The aid granted is valid for the entire period of completion of the course, without the need for annual reassessments. However, benefits may be cancelled in cases such as lack of regular enrollment, insufficient grades or attendance, withdrawal from the course, irregular occupation of student housing or in the event that the student suffers penalties provided for in the USP General Regulations, such as verbal warning, written reprimand, suspension or exclusion from the University.
